Sony’s latest CSR Report highlights the steps the company is taking to ensure its products are energy efficient.
According to the report, Sony reduced power consumption within 90 per cent of its product categories during 2006.
From February 2007, the standby power consumption of all Sony BRAVIA LCD televisions sold in Europe was below 1 watt, while most models were below 0.3 watts.
Sony has introduced an ‘Advanced VAIO Power Management’ function to its VAIO notebooks, which allows users to temporarily turn off devices to save energy.
The company also now uses a new White LED backlight in some of its VAIO screens, with a significant reduction in power usage.
Sony has also ensured that its DVD players operate at under 0.1 watts in standby mode. Its latest Home Audio range has a standby power consumption of just 0.3 watts.
Through energy saving ‘Stamina’ engineering, Sony’s Walkman S series NW-S706F now provides up to 50 hours continuous playback with a 25% reduction in power consumption compared with earlier models.
In February 2007, Sony won the European Commission’s Sustainable Energy Europe Award, becoming to first consumer electronics and entertainment company to gain this recognition.
The award recognised Sony’s efforts to improve the energy efficiency of its products as well as its disclosure of information to consumers.
