The .eu domain celebrated its first birthday by notching up over 2.5 million registrations, a large majority of them from businesses.
According to the European Registry of Internet Domain Names (EURid), the not-for-profit organisation which controls the domain, .eu is now Europe’s third most popular top-level domain and the seventh most popular in the world. Only .de and .co.uk are more widespread than .eu in Europe.
Only EU citizens and EU-based businesses and organisations are allowed to use the .eu domain name. The name ensures that consumer rights are protected by EU rules and standards.
.eu is also one of the fastest-growing top-level domains. It recorded a 17% increase in registrations over the past five months.
The strongest demand for the address has come from Germany, which accounted for 31% of .eu domain name registrations. Britain accounted for 17% of registrations while the Netherlands accounted for 12%.
