New research from French Web-monitoring company XiTi Monitor, shows that the Mozilla Foundations’s Web browser, Firefox, gained on average an extra 3.1 per cent of the market in 32 European countries in the four months to July.
In the first week of July 2006, Firefox held 21.1 per cent of the market. A year later Firefox had increased this significantly to 27.8 per cent of the European market.
The browser still has a long way to go to catch up with Internet Explorer - Microsoft holds 66.5 per cent of the browser market across Europe. Other browsers including Safari and Opera make up the remaining 5.7 per cent.
However Firefox’s popularity is soaring in Eastern Europe. It has 47.9 per cent of the market in Slovenia and over 39 per cent in Poland, Hungary and Croatia.
This is attributed to the support network in Eastern European countries. There is active forum support online and also readily available support from people in the community who will come to a business and remedy any problems.
Xi Ti Monitor’s results are based on a study of nearly 96,000 websites carried out during the week of July 2 to July 8.
