Canonical, the London-based company which acts as open-source community Ubuntu’s commercial sponsor, has released version 7.10 of its Linux operating system.
The release of the software, code-named Gutsy Gibbon, marks Ubuntu’s third anniversary.
Ubuntu 7.10 is designed to be easier to use than previous versions and, in some ways, beats Windows for desktop usabilility.
The lates version features the new GNOME 2.20 desktop environment; the Compiz Fusion 3D desktop effects software; Tracker for desktop search; fast user switching; dynamic screen configuration and a new graphical display configuration tool; automatic printer installation software; and NTFS-3g to enable reads and writes to Windows partitions.
A Firefox plug-ins finder wizard has been added, making it easier to search and install packaged plug-ins such as Adobe’s Flash player.
A restricted driver manager can now fetch and install non-free firmware required for some chipsets.
Ubuntu 7.10 also benefits from increased power-efficiency. The Linux kernel has been updated and the CPU now uses less power and produces less heat.
Security has been upgraded with the option to encrypt hard disks (or individual partitions) to protect data from unauthorised access. The AppArmor security framework will also be included.
