Post regulator announces market liberalisation date
Link: Post regulator announces market liberalisation date
The date for the liberalisation of the postal market has been brought forward to 1st January 2006.
This is 15 months earlier than expected, and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) is especially concerned that the earlier date will force the Royal Mail to rush to cut jobs to increase apparent efficiency.
After liberalisation, different companies will be able to set up their own post boxes and control their own deliveries.
However, there are additional concerns that not only will consumers be confused by the choices, but that rural areas could face a fall in service with increased prices, as companies chase profits.
