Google has had a double dose of good news this week; it posted sparkling first quarter results and was also named most powerful global brand of 2007, knocking Microsoft off the top spot.
Google’s first quarter revenue rose 63% to $3.66 billion, more than double Yahoo’s $1.67 revenue for the same period.
The company’s first-quarter profits also soared, to $1 billion compared with the same period last year. The profits result outstripped analyst’ expectations by around $40m.
In contrast, Yahoo recently reported an 11% fall in profit to $142 million.
In its second piece of good news, Google was placed first in the 2007 ranking from Millward Brown Optimor. Google was given a brand value of more than $66bn, nearly double its value in the 2006 ranking.
Microsoft was placed third this year with a brand value of $55bn, while IBM was in ninth place.
Other technology companies in the top 100 list included Nokia in 12th place, HP in 15th and Apple in 16th position.
The aim of the ranking is to calculate the value a brand is expected to generate for its owner in the future.
