US federal agents on Wednesday shut down the Elite Torrents network and seized its main server over the appearance there of illegal copies of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith hours before the film appeared in theatres last week.
The network enabled the download of almost 18,000 films and software
programs using BitTorrents software that cut download times significantly. The Justice Department said that material available on the network included content not yet available in theatres and stores.
The investigation is also intent on finding the individuals who have provided copyrighted content to Elite Torrent. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) expressed their approval of the seizure, which acting US assistant attorney general John Richter said ends the message that online film piracy will not be tolerated.
Hollywood believes that online film piracy could cost the film industry, in the same way that online music sharing has allegedly impacted CD sales.
