It seems that Google is hiring people to help with the SERPs, according to human standards of relevancy, with an advertisement for employment here: Quality Rater
Google, Inc., the search engine company based in Mountain View, California, is recruiting part-time remote workers to help with search quality evaluation on a project basis. Candidates must be web-savvy and analytical, have excellent web research skills and a broad range of interests. Specific areas of expertise are highly desirable.
Some people are even claiming that Google is going to be looking to track down specific “spammers” in the listings.
Really, though, I’m reminded of comments Mike Grehan covered in his Search Engine Marketing: The Essential Best Practice Guide - where it was mention in the interviews that major Search engines usually have humans checking the bigger search areas for relavancy.
