An electronic petition on the Government’s E-Petitions website calls for the Prime Minister to use his influence to stop Microsoft Corp overcharging UK customers for its new Visa operating system.
The petition, which over 1,250 people signed in less than one day, will be sent to the Prime Minister’s office after it closes on 20 April. It was posted by Paul Milne.
The petition claims that Vista Ultimate, the premium version of the operating system, costs £350 in the UK but only £195 in the US.
The source of these figures is not given on the site, but the actual retail price of Vista varies significantly from supplier to supplier. According to the recommended retail prices on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, Vista Ultimate is priced at $399.99 (£203) in the US, and £369.99 in the UK.
Vista Home Basic, the version for people who qualify for an upgrade to Vista, costs £99 in the UK and around 20% less in the US at $159 (£81).
