« AOL updates security | Main | Browsers update: Firefox and IE move on » November 18, 2004Scratch-resistant DVDsTDK has developed new anti-scratch technology, that can apparently withstand a scredriver attack by a small child - without the disc being scratched. Obviously this is good news for those of us with small children - let's hope this forward thinking development continues, and the existing of DVD Regions is scrapped along with the more fragile DVD discs. This also might help tip the balance in the also ridiculous DVD format wars, which is shaping up between Blu-ray technology and HD DVD. As reported on CNet: Try scratching this DVD TDK's coating could become crucial for the long-term competitiveness of Blu-ray, which can hold up 50GB of data on a dual-layer disc compared with the common 4.7GB DVDs. The format is facing off against rival technology known as HD DVD, which stores less data--30GB on a dual-layer disc--but is no more damage prone than ordinary DVDs.
