« Personal search: limitations? | Main | Design in Britain 2004-2005 » November 24, 2004SEO and MarketingIt seems that people in the sales industry are finally waking up to the realities of SEO - namely, that the sales gibberish they've been eating up about easy sales and lead generation via SEO is complete bunk. Dana VanDen Heuvelwrites up a quick shortlist of pointers here: SEO & site (blog) myths, which namely points out that meta-tags and auto-submission software aren't really all they're cracked up to be. Brian Carroll continues the subject here: SEO Myths hurt Lead Generation results. True. But let's face it, this has all been known in SEO for at least the two years I've been practicing. It seems that the sales people are finally waking up to what commercial SEO's are actually involved with, rather than being blinded by high figure promises, such as "submit to 1,000,000 directories" and "guaranteed automated top rankings". Professional SEO's have always dismissed these claims, but it's people's greed for sales that have led them to swallow such large and unwieldy promises. I have clients who came to me precisely because easy promises are easy to swallow with even half-decent telesales. After all, how could 1,000,000 directory links be bad? And the company has a special relatioship with Google? Of course, industry ignorance is a prime problem, and and it's this ignorance that a lot of companies are playing on. However, with SEMPO finally moving, and the new SMA-UK and SMA-EU Search Markering organisations finally coming into the public arena proper, hopefully it'll become harder for such ignorance to be played upon. Until then, it's important to get information from proper SEO articles and if you're not sure, ask in one of the many SEO forums for comment. Ultimately, SEO is a slow and often frustrating process, than can require months of work before any clear results start to come in. My bigger SEO clients all work on a minimum 6 months contract. SEO isn't a quick and easy process, and as in most cases in life, if someone promises you quick and easy riches via any m,ethod, you need to deal with the claims with a little common sense.
