Those who fail to send their Self Assessment forms in by January 31st could face an automatic 100 fine, plus as much as 60 per day.
However, the IR has acknowledge that a surge in traffic meant that filling in tax returns online may not have been possible for some. Now it says that failed submissions that are resent within the next 14 days will allow people to escape fines.
As many as 1 in 10 failed to submit their tax forms on time last year.
