Portable devices with USb pose security risk
Research by security company, PointSec, shows that portable music players and tiny USB drives could pose a serious security risk to companies.
The study found that 84% of firms know that the data storage devices are used by staff, but few companies monitor what information is being loaded onto them.
Approximately 33% of the organisations surveyed said that users are connecting up the devices to PCs without permission.
As removable drives become more powerful and less expensive, there is an increased risk that firms could lose large amounts of sensitive information.
According to Martin Allen, UK managing director of PointSec, moving files from home to work could also expose firms to significant risk from viruses and other malicious programs. He suggested that banning the devices would not be effective, but firms needed to monitor what was being placed on drives.
