March 04, 2005Apple wins ruling against secret sourcesApple has won a landmark ruling in its battle against leaked product releases, after a US judge ruled that online publishers are not protected against revealing sources, as print publishers are. The case was brought by Apple against three Apple fan sites, that published secret product news before Apple officially released it. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James Kleinberg ruled that the websites were not entitled to protect the identity of their sources, and must make the information accessible to Apple. Although this proves something of a victory for the company, Apple's legla pursuit of fan sites is seen to be damaging to public relations.

Reported by the Register in Customers, resellers bite Apple back, it details that the action is being taken by three different law firms, filing San Francisco. Apple resellers are also alleging that confidential customer lists they provide to Apple, are being used by Apple to promote its own chain of retail stores at their expense. There is no comment yet from Apple, but the claims are damaging to a company that has otherwise presented itself as concerned with consumer interests. Spurred on by massive iPod sales, its share value has risen from $23 to an all-time high of $81.99. This is the third share split that Apple have entered into, after doing the same in 1987 and 2000. The new announced split will occur on February 28th and will increase the number of Apple shares from 900 million to 1.8 billion.
