Fox Broadcasting is planning to make selected prime-time series available for download on the Web sites of over 200 of its affiliated stations.
The plan is an extension of the company’s Fox On Demand initiative which was launched in October.
Previously the service only allowed streaming of free ad-supported episodes on Fox.com, MySpace.com and 24 owned-and-operated stations. The new deal means that Fox stations will offer a new version of the Fox on Demand player that allows streaming and downloading of shows. Initially, downloads will not be available on MySpace.
Visitors will be able to purchase individual episodes or entire seasons of shows such as ‘24′ and ‘Prison Break’ through Fox’s video-distribution platform, which they can then watch on computers or portable devices.
A single episode, which would be available the day after its prime-time premiere, will cost $1.99 (£1), while entire series will cost from $19.99 to $39.99 (£10.25 to £20.50).
