A new survey by Ipsos MORI identifies Wi-Fi as the most important technology to consumers when they are purchasing new PCs.
Wireless connectivity was found to be more important than enhanced processing power, portable connectivity and the internet.
Half of all respondents from the UK believed that wireless technology was more likely to increase productivity than other technologies, with 80% of people citing flexibility and mobile access as its main benefits.
According to Marcus Harvey, a director at Lexmark, which sponsored the research, people are more concerned with working smarter, rather than more quickly.
The survey, which covered 9,000 computer users in 18 countries, found that 60% of people had wireless technology at home and 50% of these used it to wirelessly connect to a printer.
