Google’s subsidiary in China, which was launched in 2005, is being sued by a Chinese company who says the search engine’s registered Chinese name is too similar to its own.
The company, Beijing Guge Science and Technology, claims that similarities between the names have created confusion and harmed its operations.
People trying to call Google are mistakenly calling Beijing Guge’s office, causing significant disruption to work.
Beijing Guge has contacted Google and asked the company to change its commercial name.
Google’s Chinese name is part of Beijing Guge’s commercially registered name. People searching for Google’s phone number via a local telephone directory assistance service have been directed to Beijing Guge because the search engine is not listed.
The case is being considered by a court in Beijing’s Haidian district.
