Morris Worm: 16 years ago today
The Morris Worm was accidentally released onto the internet 16 years ago today, resulting in thousands of crashed Unix-based VAX and Sun Microsystems systems and entire networks being unplugged from the internet.
The worm was written by MIT student Robert Tappan Morris as a research project, and was apparently never intended to cause damage - but commands for self-replication resulted in individual machines being infected multiple times, killing their memory.
