You are a brand
A point that a lot of small businesses apparently fail to note is that sole traders are a brand. Not just a company, but also a brand.
In fact, everybody is a brand of some kind - it's just that not everybody is selling anything.
But if you are, put some effort into branding yourself - and that means marketing yourself. You are your company, you are your brand.
This is precisely something that (no doubt soon-to-be re-employed) programmer Alexandre Gueniot has taken upon himself to make a point of - check out his online Flash CV, that says "programmer & creative marketing". He'll probably do very well in a small outfit where staff have multifunctional roles.
